Dre presents award at ASCAP Awards

The American Society of Composers, Authors and Publishers honored extraordinary lover Diddy with their Founding Fathers award, and on hand to introduce the Dirty Money-less “Looking For Love” rapper was last year’s recipient, the one and only Chrysler-shilling Dr. Dre. The actor/producer/person-we-aspire-to-be-when-waking-up claimed “music runs the world” in his speech (though Beyonce might beg to differ) before citing Dre as his favorite producer.

Dre protege Slim tha Mobster interview

Dr. Dre's Aftermath Records has seen quite a few artists come and go over the years, but one artist who has remained through it all is South Central's own Anthony Johnson better known as Slim The Mobster. Although he's been signed to the good Doctor for a good minute, Slim has kept a pretty low profile in the rap industry thus far while staying busy recording and doing various work for Aftermath Records.  The time for a low profile is over according to Slim, and after serving a three month jail bid, he's out and ready to make some noise. The young Dre protege' hooked up with AllHipHop.com to talk about what he's got in store for the world. Fans may have their doubts considering Aftermath's track record when it comes to putting artists out, but Slim remains confident as he is the last of the Mohicans on the label.

AllHipHop.com: Let's talk about your roots in this rap game.
Slim The Mobster: I've been around a few dudes that were doing music. The D.O.C is one of the dudes that I've been around for a long time. Snoop Dogg is another dude that I've been around for a long time. I just watched and it caught on. I didn't really start rapping until a few years ago. I picked it up quickly just by being able to talk and express myself. All music is really just expression.
AllHipHop.com: Weren't you going to sign with Jay-Z at one point?
Slim The Mobster: I was messing with a dude by the name of Big Chill. He had helped Lupe Fiasco previously with some business. Chill was putting that together but he got incarcerated so we never got to make that happen.

AllHipHop.com: So how did the Aftermath deal happen?
Slim The Mobster: I went to Dr. Dre's studio with a CD one day. I dropped it off and left my number on a Lottery ticket and he ended up calling me back. Dre said that if I had the patience, because he had a lot of other work going on, he would work with me.

AllHipHop.com: You didn't have any reservations? A lot of artists have signed to Aftermath and ended up leaving with their albums never seeing the light of day.
Slim The Mobster: None whatsoever. I've been there 4 years. I'm working on my album and getting ready to release a new mixtape called War Music. The concept behind that project is that everything has it's good and bad – there is a war to it – like good versus evil. It's me being good yet evilish at the same time. I'm not your typical rapper right now. I'm not in to the skinny jean movement. I'm not against what anybody else is doing, but I'm more like the N.W.A era. I've been dealing with so many things but now its time to make my name. I can really rap. It's not a myth and it's not fake.

AllHipHop.com: Do you have any collaborations on War Music?
Slim The Mobster: I've got Snoop Dogg. I like that song we did together. Another is a dude named Sly.  Everybody knows him from the Kush song and he's also on that song with Eminem and Royce Da 5'9” that's out right now. Mostly the project is just me. I'll probably put the mixtape out in the next two weeks.

AllHipHop.com: It's dropping that quick?
Slim The Mobster: It's been in the making for a minute now. I'm just going through the proper chain of command. Most artists don't get the chance to put out a mixtape over here so I've been fighting to make it happen. I've been given some leverage and room, so I've got to do it. It will be available for download and it'll give people a chance to see who I am. It's about displaying my talents. I play instruments - drums and keyboards. It's something that you are going to see from somebody out here in L.A. because 9 times out of 10 the people that rap aren't the ones that are making the beats – and vice versa. I do both.

AllHipHop.com: I had no idea that you could also make beats and music. Where did you learn this?
Slim The Mobster: From my uncle Chocolate (the producer of Vanilla Ice's “Ice Ice Baby” song) and Dr. Dre. I watched and learned from them. If its in you to do it, then its in you to do it.

AllHipHop.com: What's the biggest thing that you've learned from Dr. Dre so far?
Slim The Mobster: To keep adding slashes to your name. Like artist slash producer, actor, director and so forth. When you keep adding slashes to your name, that's the best thing for you. He also tells me to do what I feel and not to do anything that I don't believe in. There have been times where we've been given beats and I don't really like it – and that's hard to say to him. But by saying that, you're letting him know that you can't do something to the best of your ability – and he doesn't want that. He wants the best. It's always best to be upfront and tell him what it is.

AllHipHop.com: Do you think the fans are being hard too hard on him in regards to waiting for Detox? Is he getting fair treatment?
Slim The Mobster:  No, I don't think he is. He's given so much in between. You've gotten music and  albums from Eminem, 50 Cent, The Game, and others. You can't really complain.

(Video) Dr. Dre Feat. Slim The Mobster, Snoop Dogg,  Akon & Sly – Kush Remix http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cLNjrOdqa2M

AllHipHop.com: Are you on Detox?
Slim The Mobster: I'm hoping so.

AllHipHop.com: So you haven't gotten a confirmation on that?

Slim The Mobster: I have songs recorded for it but Dre has the top-secret information on that. I'm just playing it by ear. I believe that you are going to see me on there.

AllHipHop.com: What about the album that you are working on? Do you have a name for it yet?
Slim The Mobster: It's called The Movie. A lot of the things that have happened in my career, it feels like it's been scripted. From everything including being signed, it seems like something right out of a movie. Those things are rare and they sound like something that I wrote down. Sometimes it doesn't feel real. This is my movie.

AllHipHop.com: Aside from the War Music mixtape, Detox and The Movie album, what else have you got going on?
Slim The Mobster: I'm trying to figure out this film situation right now. I've got a great script that I'm trying to run with. And of course there is my label “Gang Module.” I've already got artists that I work close with like Black Friday from Compton and my little cousin Controversy from Pomona. Look out for that War Music mixtape. If you like real West Coast music, then stay tuned.

Mr Porter To Produce Two Songs On Detox

The D12 member reveals that he laced Dre with two beats for the elusive "Detox."

Billboard recently caught up with Mr. Porter (a/k/a Denaun Porter) to discuss his contributions to Eminem and Royce Da 5'9"'s acclaimed collaborative EP Hell: The Sequel. During the interview, Porter revealed that Bad Meets Evil's reunion EP isn't the only Shady/Aftermath project to which he's contributed beats. The Detroit producer revealed that he has two tracks featured on Dr. Dre's long awaited Detox. Porter discussed what it was like to produce for such a HIp Hop icon and why he's willing to wait for as long as it takes to hear Dre's third solo LP.

"[My two songs are] really different," he explained. "I didn't want to do what everybody else was doing and...send him a weed-smoking song. Dre's like a big brother to me, so I know what to approach him with, and the songs we did for him are totally different."

Porter added, "I don't care when it comes out, really. It doesn't matter to me if it ever comes out. I understand the pressure he's got on him, everybody asking for it. He's just real particular about songs. If it comes, it comes. If it doesn't, it doesn't. He can do whatever he wants."

Denaun Porter also discussed what it was like to work with the newly reunited Em and Royce.

Next Dre single feat 50Cent

50 spoke to MTV about the rampage that he went on yesterday on Twitter accusing his label of not cooperating with him. He also confirms that he album is not called Black Magic and that he’s featured on the next Dr. Dre single called ‘The Psycho’.

“So I had the record I was ready to launch, and we sat down and everybody talked. What happens is, there are a lot of people involved in my actual launch, because its three parties; it’s Shady, then you got Aftermath, then you got Interscope, and then you got me on my end. So by the time we got to go sit down with [Interscope chairman] Jimmy [Iovine], we talked a little bit, and then I ended up having to go see Dre, because we had the little issue, the confusion about the Twitter stuff.”

“We sat down, we cleared that up, me and Dre, and then we said, ‘Let’s just get back to the music and do what we do. Immediately after, we wrote a song together called ‘The Psycho’; it’s Dre’s next single.”

Chronic sales lawsuit

Dr. Dre won't be behind the microphone at a federal courthouse after all - the rapper settled a lawsuit over damages from unauthorized online sales of his album "The Chronic" a day before trial.

Attorneys for the rap superstar, whose real name is Andre Young, filed a notice of settlement in a Los Angeles federal court late Monday afternoon. He had been expected to testify during the weeklong trial, which would have decided whether Young was entitled to 100 percent of the profits from online sales of the rap album, which also helped launch the career of Snoop Dogg.

No details of the settlement, which is not yet finalized, were filed with the court.

In April a judge ruled that WIDEawake Death Row Records didn't have the proper permission to sell Young's music online or repackage it on new CD releases. The label purchased the holdings of original Death Row Records, which launched the careers of several rappers, out of bankruptcy.

He sued WIDEawake Death Row in 2010 for breach of contract, trademark infringement and misappropriation of his likeness.

Young was a co-founder of the label, but negotiated a deal to leave the company that required Death Row to obtain his permission before selling his music digitally. On Monday, "The Chronic" was no longer available for download on Apple's popular music service iTunes.

There was no immediate comment from attorneys for either Young or WIDEawake Death Row.

Detox July 26th????

Though release dates have been given before, another rumored date purports that the album will drop in the summer.

Dr. Dre has delayed his third and final solo album Detox for the past decade, giving several release dates during that time. Another alleged release date has hit the Internet, suggesting that the West Coast veteran will drop his swan song on July 26th.

According to HHNM, HMV has made the album available for pre-order in the U.K. on July 25th. The date, which falls on a Monday, would suggest that the LP would release in the States the following day, as albums release in the U.K. a day earlier.

DJ Khalil - Dre In 'Final Stretch' of 'Detox' Work

While DJ Khalil has recently contributed to new projects by Drake, John Legend, Eminem and Game, the producer tells Billboard.com that his top priority these days is helping Dr. Dre finish his endlessly delayed third album, "Detox."

"Dre's album is definitely the most important thing right now, because he is definitely in the final stretch," says DJ Khalil (real name: Khalil Abdul-Rahman), who produced "Detox's" first single, "Kush," along with Dr. Dre. "He has the record going, but I'm sure he thinks there are pieces missing still. Until he finds those pieces, maybe he's not comfortable putting it out yet."

Khalil, who has been working with Dr. Dre on "Detox" for over six years, can't predict exactly what the long-awaited album will sound like. "It's definitely a West Coast sound -- more futuristic West Coast sound -- at least from what I've turned in," he says. "I don't know what he's keeping, though."

Khalil says that his "Detox" work has kept him from focusing on Drake's sophomore album, "Take Care," but the producer -- who previously collaborated with the Canadian rapper on the "So Far Gone" track "Fear" -- professes that he has "a ton of ideas" for his second full-length. "I talked to him and just told him I'm working on stuff for him," he says. "I'm sure they are more than halfway done. I'm pretty sure he's getting close and I definitely want to be a part of it."

Game kills his dad on a Dre beat + Dre to rap on R.E.D. album

The Compton rapper also taps Snoop Dogg, Trey Songz, Drake, Chris Brown and more for the August release.

Game has revealed the guest features for his oft-delayed R.E.D. Album, dropping August 23rd. Speaking with VIBE.com, the Compton, California native revealed that guests on the album will be Dr. Dre, Pharrell Williams, Snoop Dogg, Tyler, The Creator, Wiz Khalifa, Trey Songz, Drake and Chris Brown.

"I think the people will appreciate the collaborations. Dr. Dre is actually rapping on this album," he said. "This is the first album that I’ve ever dropped where I have Dr. Dre’s voice actually on the album. Features range from Snoop Dogg to Pharrell to Wiz to Trey Songz to Chris Brown, and Drake’s on the album. I got a good cast of all-stars."

He also has a duet with Odd Future front man Tyler, The Creator on a track called "Martians vs. Goblins." "Oh yeah, Tyler [The Creator] is on the album. I forgot about him. He ain’t really doing features for nobody. He feels like fuck everything and I don’t blame him either," he explained. "It’s a California thing, and I got respect for him and his hustle and what they’re doing and just being kids and being rebels for the cause. And he respects me for doing what I did for California and the West Coast, I guess. I met him at a Diddy concert and we chopped it up and we got a song called ‘Martians vs Goblins.’ It’s dope.”

The former G-Unit affiliate spoke on a tune where he puts his father on blast over a Dr. Dre beat. "There’s a song where I kill my dad on a Dre beat. You won’t be able to understand it until you hear it. It’s sort of like a dream, but I wish it would’ve came true when I was a kid, so I kind of lived it out. It’s over this eerie Dr. Dre and it’s hard as shit. When you hear it you’ll be like ‘Damn this is crazy.’"

Kendrick saving first Dre collaboration for Detox

Any rapper who says that they don't want a beat from Dr. Dre either has to be lying or crazy, right? Well, New West Coast representative Kendrick Lamar is neither. Though he is currently working on his upcoming indie album, Section 80, Lamar has also been contributing to Dre's long-awaited Detox LP. Now, K.Dot has confirmed to MTV News that Dre has been overseeing Section 80, although the rap icon hasn't contributed any beats to it.

"I didn't want no work yet. That's the crazy part — I didn't. I wanted to go full just me — me and my team. I wanted to save that [Dre collaboration] for something bigger," Lamar explained before revealing his vision. "Bigger would be Detox. My first, me and Dre, I want them to hear it on Detox."

It's no secret that the Good Doctor has taken a liking to Lamar: He's endorsed the young rapper in radio interviews, appeared at his shows and posed for pictures with the Compton upstart. As of yet, though, Kendrick and Dre have had no formal business dealings — just a good personal relationship.

"As far as the music, we got a chemistry that's unmatched to me. Alongside with the music, we just talk about stuff, just talk about life in general," Lamar told MTV News. "I think that's why we clash together so perfect, because he sees a good kid in a bad city the same way he grew up. So we can talk about certain situations that he never talked about. I think right there alone, it's a blessing to me — for a personal relationship with him, not just the music."

Still, with all the music making and personal bonding, surely the notion of Kendrick signing to Dre's Interscope-distributed Aftermath label has had to come up. Lamar wouldn't go into detail — instead, he just smirked and remarked, "It's been in the air."

K.Dot, who is signed to West Coast independent label Top Dawg Entertainment, may not know which major he will be calling home or if he will even sign to one, but he is pretty confident about one thing — he will have a guest spot on Dre's Detox, whenever it may come out. And, whereas powerhouse artists like 50 Cent have admitted to recording for the album but couldn't say for certain whether they'd make the final track list, young Kendrick has no doubt. "Nah, I'm confirmed a few times," he said.

Game Talks Falling Out With Dre

The Game, known for making blunt statements, has nother by saying something pretty obvious, Dr Dre is one of the ducers ever. Game did go on to speak about falling out of touch Dre after his beef with 50 Cent."The best person to work with is probably definitely Dr. Dre," Game said in an interview. "He's always been like a father figure, older brother.

And it's just like going back to school and somebody really putting in the time to help you with your work ethic...[Our separation,] it was five years, but I kind of think I needed the break. I matured a lot, it helped me grow.

I had a lot of time to reflect on my life and my career and to go out there and do it myself -- but being back with Dr. Dre makes it a lot easier. He's definitely the greatest hip- hop producer of all time, and one of the best producers of all time. No disrespect to Quincy Jones, but Dre's great."
